Rumbek Death Toll May Be Far Higher Than First Reported

A preliminary government estimate says about 71 people were killed after fighting spread into Rumbek town. The exact toll remains unverified.

Lakes State police had earlier reported four deaths in Nyangkot village. Those deaths must not be added to the later government estimate without checking whether they are included.

Authorities say joint forces brought the town under control; residents and hospital staff still need verified protection and access information. Read the report →

RUMBEK · UPDATE TO INITIAL REPORT

Friday’s initial figure of four deaths referred to Nyangkot, before fighting spread into town. The government subsequently estimated approximately 71 deaths; that later total has not been independently verified and should not be combined with the earlier four without checking for overlap.
