Rumbek Imposes 14-Day Night Curfew After Deadly Fighting

RUMBEK — Rumbek Central County authorities announced a 14-day curfew on 12 October after the deadly communal fighting that swept into the town. Acting commissioner Padhil Maker Dhuol said the restriction runs from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily and is intended to prevent retaliation and looting, according to Radio Tamazuj.

The government previously put the death toll at approximately 71, including four soldiers, but called it preliminary. Associated Press reporting cited a Rumbek State Hospital clinical officer saying more than 50 wounded people had arrived. Those hospital admissions are not a complete casualty register.

What residents need to know

Authorities should publish the exact start and end dates, geographic limits, emergency and medical exemptions, and contact points for urgent passage. The order should be applied without collective blame against Pakam or Nyang civilians. South Sudan Press is seeking the written order, independently reconciled casualties, hospital access details and displaced-family needs.
