Machar Trial Prosecutor Seeks SPLM Nomination for Eastern Equatoria Governor

TORIT — Ajo Onyo’ Ohisa, identified by Radio Tamazuj as a lead prosecutor in Riek Machar's trial, has submitted a form to seek the ruling SPLM's nomination for governor of Eastern Equatoria State. He announced the bid on 9 October in Torit, according to Radio Tamazuj.

Ohisa said his proposed priorities include food insecurity, drought, damaged roads and water for livestock. Submitting a nomination form is an early party step; it does not mean he has won the SPLM nomination or become an election candidate approved by the National Elections Commission.

The announcement comes as Machar and seven co-accused face serious charges linked to the March 2025 Nasir fighting. They deny the charges. Machar has called the proceedings political, including raising concerns about the roles of private advocates and party affiliation. His allegations have not been established as findings of misconduct by the court. Read the reported defence position.

Analysis: Ohisa's bid creates an obvious question about public confidence in the appearance of prosecutorial independence. Political ambition is not, by itself, proof that the case has been improperly conducted. The relevant questions are whether any professional conflict rules apply, whether he will remain on the case during the party selection process, and whether the court and defence will be informed of any change in role.

South Sudan Press is seeking Ohisa's response, the court's position and clarification from the Ministry of Justice and SPLM on any recusal or disclosure rules. The trial's evidence and the nomination should each be assessed on their own merits.
