Central Equatoria Orders Schools to Charge Fees in South Sudanese Pounds
JUBA — Central Equatoria’s caretaker education minister, Lupai Satimon Andrew, says schools following the national curriculum must charge fees in South Sudanese pounds. He told Eye Radio that an inspected school was suspended after charging in US dollars. He described an exception for international schools with different curricula.
The minister’s statement does not identify the school or provide its written suspension order, the national directive or an appeal process. The 2021 national instruction reported by Eye Radio predates this enforcement step. Families need to know which schools are covered, what exchange-rate practices are allowed and how learning continues while a school is suspended.
Affordability and enforcement
Charging in local currency could make bills more predictable for salary earners, but the order alone does not cap tuition or prevent repeated price changes. The state should publish the directive, give schools a clear compliance route, protect enrolled pupils from interruption and provide a complaint channel for parents. We are seeking the school’s response.
