UNMISS Trains Bor Police on Community Trust and Protection

BOR — United Nations Police have trained 40 South Sudanese police counterparts in Bor, including 15 women, on community engagement and responses to sensitive protection concerns, UNMISS reported on 9 October.

The training focused on how officers handle reports from people who may fear stigma, retaliation or discrimination, including cases involving women and children. UNMISS says confidence in police can help communities share information before violence escalates.

The figure of 40 describes officers trained, not a measured improvement in police response or crime prevention. No independent outcome evaluation, budget for follow-up supervision or county-wide response-time data was included in the announcement.

Analysis: A workshop can introduce skills, but trust grows through daily practice. Residents will judge whether reports are received confidentially, survivors are treated with dignity, officers respond promptly and complaints against police are investigated. Those measures would make the training's effect visible over time.

South Sudan Press is seeking details on which police units took part, whether rural stations will receive the same training, and how Bor residents can safely report misconduct or seek protection.
