Terekeka Saturday Dance Restriction Raises Safety and Culture Questions

A county order bars traditional dance at Freedom Square on Saturday nights, according to local reporting.

South Sudan Press · 19 October 2026

A local order in Terekeka County bars traditional dance and cultural activities at Freedom Square every Saturday night, Access Radio reported on 16 October. The reported instrument, Local Order No. 02/2026 dated 13 October, cites security concerns and says criminals exploit weekend gatherings.

The order concerns a particular place and recurring night; it should not be described as a countrywide ban on traditional dance. The county should explain the incidents behind it, whether the measure is temporary, and whether safer venues or hours were considered. Performers, residents, women and youth groups should have a chance to respond.

South Sudan Press has not independently inspected a signed copy or measured the order's enforcement since its announcement. Its effects on vendors and performers also need checking.
