The United Nations has urged authorities and humanitarian partners to treat Bentiu’s flood exposure as an immediate preparedness concern, Eye Radio reports.

UN official Ramanathan Balakrishnan raised the issue at a Thursday meeting on durable solutions for internally displaced people. He called for decisions with clear responsibilities and resources, alongside longer-term recovery options.

His remarks linked preparedness with water management, services and displaced families’ informed choices about return, integration or relocation. The report does not establish a new flood displacement total or a precise date when further inundation will occur.

A warning becomes useful when translated into practical responsibilities: who maintains protective works, who monitors conditions and how communities receive timely information. Those details should be accessible before emergency movement becomes necessary.

Any relocation proposal should explain available services and how families can make informed choices. Monitoring should distinguish households newly affected by flooding from people already living in prolonged displacement. That distinction is necessary to assess both immediate needs and recovery.

This is a preparedness warning, not confirmation of a newly measured flood emergency or a verified new displacement count.
