Upper Nile University’s Malakal Return: Has Diploma Teaching Begun?
The university planned to restart a diploma college in Malakal in early October, but the published sources reviewed do not confirm that classes are now under way.
A partial return
College director Isaac Deng Akuei said in late September that 92 students had been admitted and that lecture halls, staff and textbooks were ready for the Human Resource Development College in Malakal. The university’s own site reports the release of admission results for Malakal diploma applicants.
This is a restoration of part of the institution’s presence, not evidence that all operations have been relocated from Juba. The university was originally based in Malakal and shifted operations during the 2013 conflict. Its official site currently describes a four-campus network.
Conditions students need
Akuei said some dormitories were occupied by members of the organised forces and that water and electricity also needed attention. The college was seeking help from the Upper Nile State government to prepare accommodation. A prospective student should confirm the lecture timetable, admission, fees and housing directly with the university before travelling.
Accountability test
The university and Higher Education Ministry should publish the number actually enrolled and attending, the first lecture date, a dormitory handover timetable, a utilities plan, staffing and a costed roadmap for the Malakal campus. Until then, describe the move as planned or partial, not a completed relocation.
