Four Passengers Reported Killed as Tonj East Violence Spreads to the Road
Tonj East’s caretaker commissioner says armed youth shot four passengers in an ambush during an escalation of communal violence. The account needs independent verification.
Caretaker Commissioner Machuei Bith told Radio Tamazuj that a businessman, a bus conductor, a soldier and a girl were killed at Ngap Anet Boma in Ngap Agok Payam. He said they had been travelling in three commuter vehicles from the Romich area towards Tonj South County. Four other passengers were reportedly wounded and admitted to a hospital in Tonj Town.
The report, published on Friday, 16 October, says the attack happened on Tuesday. The commissioner attributed it to armed youth who he said mistook the passengers for wounded members of a rival community being transported for care. That account of motive has not been independently established.
This road ambush is separate from the clashes of 12–13 October, for which reports quoting the commissioner have given different death tolls. It is not clear how local authorities are recording incidents or whether any figures overlap. A name-based register, hospital confirmation and witness interviews are needed before publishing a combined toll.
The road attack raises immediate questions for civilians: whether passenger transport can resume safely, what escorts or other protection are available, and whether injured people can reach treatment. Authorities say they are investigating with traditional leaders. South Sudan Press has not independently confirmed arrests or a secure route.
