Tonj East Clashes Leave Heavy Casualties as Official Accounts Conflict

Reporting status: The figures and claims below remain attributed to their sources. South Sudan Press has not independently verified all underlying records.

Intercommunal fighting in Tonj East County on 12–13 October has left numerous people dead and wounded, but reports attributed to the county caretaker commissioner give different totals. Radio Tamazuj reported 16 killed and 34 wounded in Ngap Agok and Malual Chum payams. The Radio Community reported 26 killed and more than 30 injured, also citing Commissioner Machuei Bith Bol. The figures have not been reconciled; South Sudan Press cannot establish a final toll.

The commissioner told Radio Tamazuj that the violence followed the earlier killing of a member of the Akok Deng Achuil community by unidentified armed men in Mader Boma. Some members suspected the neighbouring Thiik Majok Makom community and allegedly attacked residential areas in retaliation. The identity of the earlier killers and individual responsibility for the subsequent violence remain under investigation.

The competing accounts may differ in timing, geographical scope or inclusion of subsequent incidents, including a reported road ambush. Neither outlet published a common, name-based register that would permit a reliable comparison. It would be misleading to present either 16 or 26 as a verified final total.

Authorities should clarify when security personnel reached the affected payams, which hospitals treated the wounded, whether families have fled, and whether separate investigations are under way into the initial killing and subsequent attacks. In the run-up to the planned December elections, safe movement and protection of civilians matter well beyond the immediate dispute.
