SPLM Sends Aspirants to Constituencies as Party Primaries Move Forward

The SPLM has instructed aspiring candidates to return to their constituencies and engage local party structures before its primaries, according to state broadcaster SSBC. The directive followed a meeting chaired by SPLM leader President Salva Kiir on candidate selection for the planned December election.

This is a party instruction, rather than proof that voting in the primaries has begun. The report does not provide a complete calendar, nomination fees, local voter lists, eligibility rules or an appeal process. Those details will determine how transparent and competitive the selection becomes.

Because the president and many senior public officials also hold party positions, the public should be able to distinguish party spending and travel from state-funded activity. South Sudan Press is seeking the written primary timetable and rules, together with safeguards governing use of public vehicles, staff and funds.

The National Elections Commission separately administers the national election; an SPLM nomination should not be confused with formal acceptance of a candidate by the commission.
