Lawyer Petitions Regulator Over Expiry of Unused Mobile Bundles
Juba lawyer Peter Malou Jalap has petitioned the National Communication Authority over MTN South Sudan’s expiry of unused data and voice bundles. He argues that customers should receive rollover provisions and alerts before balances are erased, according to reports of his complaint.
MTN has acknowledged receiving the complaint and indicated it would respond following regulatory guidance, according to The Dawn. A complaint is an allegation and request for intervention: the NCA has not issued a finding that MTN’s terms breach the law.
The question is especially relevant where power cuts, network disruption or affordability prevent subscribers from using a paid bundle before it expires. The regulator should publish the applicable consumer rules, explain whether bundle terms are adequately disclosed, and say whether it will seek evidence on service interruptions.
South Sudan Press has requested the petition and responses from the NCA, MTN, Zain and Digitel, including comparable expiry and alert practices. Any remedy should be reported only once the regulator or operators formally announce it.
