Machar Seeks to Show Video Evidence as Court Sets Monday Ruling
The special court hearing the case against Riek Machar is expected to decide on Monday, 19 October, whether he may display video recordings while presenting his defence statement. Prosecutors objected to introducing the footage at that stage; Machar and his lawyers say it supports his allegation that officials had prejudged the case.
The pending decision concerns the presentation of proposed video exhibits and the procedure for Machar’s continuing testimony. It is not a ruling on whether the allegations against him are true, whether the prosecution is politically motivated, or the ultimate outcome of the trial.
Machar has argued that public statements made around the funeral of General David Majur Dak demonstrate bias. That is his contention, disputed by the prosecution and not established by the judges. The court should clarify the governing evidentiary rule and whether the defence can tender the material at a later stage if it cannot play it on Monday.
South Sudan Press will report the actual ruling after the hearing. Readers should not assume that an anticipated procedural decision has already been delivered.
