Abyei caretaker information minister Yohanna Akol Ngor told the Associated Press on Tuesday that 153 people had died after Monday’s drone strike on Amiet Market. The figure is an official report, not a name-based independent count. A fuel depot burned after the attack.

Later, Ngor told Eye Radio that 153 bodies were buried in one grave and 73 in another, implying 226. Eye Radio described the toll as more than 220. It is not yet clear how those burial totals relate to the earlier count, whether all bodies were identified, or whether the locations and dates overlap. South Sudan Press is displaying at least 153 reported dead while labeling the later figure separately.

MSF said its team and Health Ministry staff at Ameth Bek Hospital received more than 20 wounded patients, including burns and critical cases. Ngor estimated that more than 8,000 people fled; no independent registration figure is yet available.

South Sudan and Abyei authorities blamed Sudan’s army. An unnamed Sudanese military officer told AP the army conducted a strike against fuel tankers he said were supplying the RSF, and claimed the dead were fighters or smugglers. AP could not verify his account of the targets or the victims. A military objective claim does not settle whether civilians were killed or whether the strike complied with the laws of war.

A reconciled record needs burial lists, hospital and morgue entries, witness accounts, verified imagery and an independent incident assessment. Aid agencies should identify safe shelter, family tracing and medical referral routes for those who fled.
